Welcome to the DK Quilt Guild weekly diary.
What a week. I offer to manage a volunteer project and wham…the IRS helps themselves to my bank account and the Social Security Administrations is supposed to put way more back hasn't yet. Then a huge project for my husband’s business that has been in the works for over 2 years is finally a go requiring a flurry of neurosis and activity. And last but worst, a personal tragedy in the life of a very good friend who was already down on his luck.
Consequently I’m a little behind…on everything.
I've received first block in the mail day before yesterday, whoo hoo! Thanks Pam in Calif for starting things off with a pretty pinwheel in orange and blue with white on the border. Once I have a few more I'll post pictures for all to see.
We have quite a few quilters here at Daily Kos who volunteered to donate a block:
stoneboat (done and in the mail)
Pam from Calif (done and here)
Kitsap River
Melanie In IA
Sara R - DK Quilting Rock Star
RLMiller
leu2500
Nannyberry
madame damnable
florene
pucklady
glorificus
I have 12 people on the list right now, if I missed anyone that wants to donate speak up and I’ll add you to the list. If we get more than our goal of 12 blocks we'll make the quilt bigger. If we get fewer then planed we’ll make up the difference.
The Quilting
We're lucky to have BeadLady, a professional long arm quilter with phenomenal skills to do the quilting, provided her health cooperates. The requirements from her are simple:
“To make the quilting more fluid - please no permanent stuff on the back of the appliqué - unless I'm not supposed to do any quilting on the actual appliqué. “
Time Line
12-1/2” Blocks due to me by the 5th of March.
Assembled top to BeadLady by April 2nd.
Four weeks to quilt and bind, once again BeadLady’s body willing.
That puts us to April 30th for a completed quilt.
Colors Selection
Everyone has questions on color selection. There is no way that we can match colors exactly without providing fabric and there was no time so we’ll just have to go for general guidelines.
The general guidelines are for each block to include DailyKos orange and/or NFTT blue. These are not specifically defined colors. Every monitor and every printer will represent color differently and both logos include varying shades of each color. If we tried to match exactly we would not be successful anyway so my theory is that it’s best not to try.
madame damnable (terrific name by the way) put up an example of a similar community quilt in the last diary which you can see here.
Bottom line use what’s in your heart and in your fabric stash. You can use solids or prints, batiks or floral, contemporary or reproductions prints. Think of this quilt as a celebration of diversity.
Fundraising
My plan is not good and I could really use some input. I think that we need someone one more involved with NFTT to help. I don’t know what sorts of tax structures are available for the donation portion, I don’t know the needs and timing of NFTT and I don’t know if there is a plan to use this at the convention.
My idea of having an “r word” turned out to be just slightly illegal (in fact even using the "r word" is not recommended) so we won’t be doing that. Thanks to Sara R for her knowledge on these matters.
Our choices are to have a drawing or to have an auction. The drawing is most similar to the “r word” and could be done on line or at the convention. I haven’t really had time to think this through so I hope everyone will speak up in the comments.
I may be prejudiced but I think quilters are the best!
Oh and here is the NFTT logo:
