A little noted curiosity during the Akin firestorm is that while voices up and down the party have demanded Todd Akin drop his Senate bid, no one seems to be suggesting that he resign his current House seat. If the man is so offensive that we can't risk him representing Missouri in the Senate, why is he allowed to remain in the House? He was re-elected in 2010 with 67.9 percent of the vote so I suppose the argument would be that he was elected with overwhelming support of his constituents but he also won a primary over two well-financed candidates.
Incidentally, despite being a garden variety Republican loon, Todd Akin also has more foreign policy experience than Paul Ryan. According to Wikipedia:
Akin has spent significant time working on military and veterans issues. On the House Armed Services Committee he currently serves as the Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, which handles all Navy and Air Force issues. In the past he has served as Ranking Republican on the Seapower Subcommittee and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. Akin has also introduced a number of veterans-related bills, most notably the Open Burn Pit Registry Act, which creates a registry for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who were exposed to burn pits.
This is also not Akin's first foray with offensive statements. In June 2011, he told Tony Perkins that the "heart of liberalism is a hatred of God and a belief that government should replace God." He later had to clarify and apologized if he offended. He joked with a friendly audience in the summer of 2009 about his Democratic colleagues getting almost lynched during their town halls.
I also did a Google search for "calls for Todd Akin to resign from the House" and all the results were for the Senate race including several Scott Brown references, a Chris Christie reference and a John Cornyn plea.
Of course we know what's going on here, the hypocrisy is overwhelming but why hasn't the media addressed this?
Note: I found a similar diary on this while doing my Google search and am linking to it here:
