This diary is part of a continuing series on living with Asperger's Syndrome. If you wish to know more about my diagnosis, you should start here.
Hello everyone. While I didn't watch any of the DNC on television, I have to say I'm as fired up as many of you are here. While I won't underestimate the economic royalists that call themselves Republican or Conservative, it's easy to say that the DNC was great to read about.
With that being said, I have some news of my own: I finally have a job (A paid internship), or at least I will be starting in about 10 days. From what I'm being told, I'll be working in something along the lines of engineering, infrastructure and natural resources. I'll probably learn more about what this entails in the coming days, but this has me pretty excited. For the first time in my life I'll be able to work in a field I actually want to be in.
It's supposed to last about 14 weeks, but my goal is to be hired full time either during the internship or as soon as it ends. Even if I'm not hired, it's something that can go on my resume so in the long term, this will help me a lot.
I'll type a bit more below the jump.
Over the past few months, I've been going stir crazy over not having any employment, and the journey to finding any has been all the more difficult. On the other hand, I've been doing a lot to help myself when I get into the workforce. The Asperger's diagnosis was probably the most important step I could have taken, because it certainly has helped me come to terms with a lot of things.
I had spent many months looking for a job, but not many were willing to give me a second look, and those who did then told me they were looking for folks with more experience or greater educational background. It sure did drive me nuts, not so much because I was turned down for jobs, but because there was always a reason not to hire me, even when I knew I interviewed well.
I get that I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go in the real world, but I know I can handle myself if given the chance.
On another note, I still can't seem to get the recipe for root beer quite right. One batch came out tasting like stale cigars. The funny thing is I've never actually smoked one, nor do I smoke anyway, but even then I'd say that description is still fairly accurate. I've been trying to follow a couple of recipes I found on the web but it never comes out right.
In any case, the next few months should be interesting. I'll be sure to write more as time passes.
See you around,
Homer
