The Dishonorable Senator Irvin
Remember how all the voter ID laws don't really have anything to do with race? It's just that Republicans want to protect the integrity of elections, right? Well apparently Arkansas state senator Missy Irvin (Republican, obviously) didn't get the memo....
I stumbled upon Ms. Irvin's twitter feed after it was retweeted by one of my favorite accounts, @YesYoureRacist. The lovely Ms. Irvin has retweeted a tweet that refers to voter fraud, cheap vodka, and fried chicken. Yep, nothing racist there at all. I screencapped her timeline in case by some act of God she is shamed into deleting the tweet later.
The tweet in question reads
This was in response to Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe vetoing the voter ID law that passed out of the legislature. Aren't you glad to know that racism was not the impetus for trying to pass new restrictions on voters?
Time after time, as red states have passed restrictions on who can vote, where they can vote, when they can vote, and how they can vote, we have been told that it is not to keep Democratic-voting minorities away from the polls. We are told that it is to uphold the integrity of elections and keep them fair. We have been told that race is not a factor in these laws, and that they aren't targeting black and Hispanic voters. And then along comes Ms. Irvin, shining a light on exactly who voter ID laws are intended to keep out of the voting booths.
Contact Ms. Irvin and let her know that racism isn't funny and now that the mask has fallen off GOP efforts at voter ID laws, we will be holding racist politicians accountable. Her state legislature contact info can be found at the link below.
