One of my favorite Top Commenteers loved to do dKos historical diaries, diaries about the ‘old days,’ diaries about the ‘legends’ of those early days, the giants on whose shoulders we stand today. Some of his most incredible diaries served as introductions to the writings of those special bloggers. I want to visit some of HIS diaries tonight, to honor his fine community-building efforts, but also to give some perspective for the terrific new additions to our Top Comments family.
Tonight this is about sardonyx, without whom Top Comments simply would not exist. Yes, Carnacki visualized and created Top Comments, but he wasn’t an administrator. sardonyx accepted that mantle. I had it a short time, then gloriana had it, then sardonyx. And he did EVERYTHING for Top Comments until brillig assumed the role. There were times he was very frustrated trying to get the schedule filled so that TC would not ‘go dark’ on a given evening, and he was brilliantly successful at it. It came at a high cost, however, in worry and aggravation, and it is why his active voice is not here with us tonight.
More below! But, first, a word from our sponsor ...

But, listen here, Mister Man. The seeds of your creativity and generosity remain, and they continue to give gifts long after you stopped being here WITH us. We know you are still voting for the right candidates, we know you are donating to Democratic candidates, we know you are influencing those in your personal circle, through your example, your compassion, your intelligence and good-heartedness. Just, please know your gifts are alive and active on Daily Kos even today.
We want you to take care of yourself, we want you to follow your heart and do the things you feel called upon to do. But know the joy you’d bring should you once again circulate among us. No work, no obligation, just the joy of your company.

It is important to note that his contributions to Daily Kos and the community went far beyond his historical diaries. sardonyx was a genius at Daily Kos search and research. He was a terrifically gifted beta-tester, which is why his profile carries the honored beta tester badge. Here are just a few of the diaries he wrote when the fourth edition of Daily Kos was in the testing and rollout phases.

The great and powerful kos knows. So do many others. And, hopefully, more tonight.
I know this is too many links to go through in one evening, even I have not revisited all those old diaries. But when you have time to spare, return to his diaries and browse a bit. You won’t regret it. That’s a promise.
On to tonight's comments! Courtesy of brillig!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From LinSea:
In Meteor Blades' Republicans want to make real war on Christmas by rejecting renewal of jobless benefit extensions comes rb137's comment accurately demonstrating the difference between austerity and abuse.
From brillig: Nominating this one by Avilyn, from RASalvatore's brilliant diary 3.8%. Why? Because it's exactly what I said when I read the diary.
