Not Wayne LaPierre, but David Keene the president of the NRA.
To set the scene.
Here in the New England we are slowly entering Town Meeting season.
In Waltham, one of the selectmen proposed a law banning Assault Weapons, HiCap Magazines, etc.
It was proposed a few days ago, but more people wanted to speak on the issue. They tabled the issue until today, where they held they meeting at the local school.
Due to opposition the proposal was withdrawn, the news report highlighted the reactions of the townsfolk. Most of them were not supportive of the by-law, though keep in mind MA still has tougher than average gun laws.
Which brings us to most interesting part of the news story. The NRA president David Keene was in town. He was interviewed for this story, his response:
Of Westford’s attempt, Keene told WBZ, “One of the things that people in these town meetings and other folks ought to look at is the constitution itself. It is possible and it is legal to put certain restrictions on second amendment rights,” he continued, “but those kinds of restrictions have to be looked at very critically.”
I don't know how much influence the NRA has on its Institute for Legislative Action(i.e. Wayne LaPierre et al) but it is an interesting walkback from the absolutist standing from the ILA.
Incidentally this wasn't the main part of the story as the focus was on town. It seems to me that this is an interesting development
Here is the link to the story.
NB: Title was edited. The News clip I saw didn't have the stupid hammer quote. So I have revised the title.
