There are certain issues on which there is no other side. And one of them is that we do not court-martial prisoners of war who have been tortured by the enemy. But apparently Chris Wallace doesn't think so. For those of you who missed it, Wallace actually wondered on this week's edition of Fox News Sunday if Bowe Bergdahl should face the death penalty for walking away from his unit. As ghoulish as this was by itself, it came after reports emerged that Bergdahl has told medical officers at the Army hospital where he's recuperating that he was tortured and beaten while in captivity, and was even kept in a cage in complete darkness after two attempts to escape. By all appearances, he is so traumatized that while he could be back in the States now, he isn't mentally ready to return home yet.
It's one thing for someone like Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly or Mike Huckabee to say something like this. But for the anchorman on a flagship program of a major network to even suggest a POW should be on trial for his life when there is no evidence whatsoever that said POW is a traitor is flat-out unacceptable. For said anchorman to do so after evidence emerges that strongly suggests he was tortured is absolutely heinous. If Wallace has anything in him, he should apologize to Bergdahl and his family--and then he should resign. And if he doesn't do so, maybe it's time for Fox News' liberal commentators--like Bob Beckel, Juan Williams and Alan Colmes--to walk out. I know they're there to give some semblance of balance to Fox News But if I were a liberal commentator on that outlet, there is no way I could stay employed there as long as Wallace is there. Doing so would be selling out my ethics.
Wallace needs to go, and go now. And if he doesn't, Fox News' liberals should walk out and leave it as a right-wing hulk.
