So, we're moving.
More after this word from our sponsor:
WYFP is our community's Saturday evening gathering to talk about our problems, empathize with one another, and share advice, pootie pictures, favorite adult beverages, and anything else that we think might help. Everyone and all sorts of troubles are welcome. May we find peace and healing here. Won't you please share the joy of WYFP by recommending?
So on Tuesday we got a note from our apartment office with a form to fill out "for move out on 1/28/15."
That was Wednesday.
I posted a panicked note in Tuesday night's Top Comments worried that I'd be sleeping in the car for the next several days/weeks.
Obviously, that didn't happen. But we are going to be moving, the sooner the better.
This has actually been going on for several months -- or should have been except for a lot of dealing with Mr. Scribe's mom's health issues (which are not good, but that's another story) and a bit of ball dropping on Mr. Scribe's part. Enough that I'm leaving it up to him to set up appointments to see apartments and the like -- besides, he knows his schedule better than I do considering he spends much of his time with his mom.
I'm doing my part by researching places online. We'd prefer to stay in Sunnyvale or environs just because it would keep us closer both to her and to Mr. Scribe's brother, who has his own health issues (physical and mental) and who Mr. Scribe takes grocery shopping or to get cigarettes once a week or so, and also takes to sporting events (they're going to a Golden State Warriors game in March); their mom provides us with money to help him out a bit and supplement his disability income.
Unfortunately, thanks to Teh Google and other high-tech companies, we're being priced out of Sunnyvale. We're also hampered by two factors: one, because I'm a non-driver we need to be within reasonable distance of public transit (and preferably a bus line that runs 7 days a week), and two because of our age and general decrepitude (knees are getting a bit creaky) we really need a first floor apartment (unless we went with a complex with an elevator but those are pretty much out of our price point anyway).
I did find a possibility in San Jose, and it's actually a decent location; it's near Interstate 280 so he'd actually have an easier time getting to his mom's, right on one frequent bus line and a block from a couple of others, and right down the street from light rail so awesome transit access (if we were going to an event at the SAP Center we could take light rail and save $20+ on parking, especially since we can ride free with him being a retired bus driver). Best of all, we might be able to get a 2 bedroom for less than we're paying for our current 1 bedroom place. That would give us a spare room that we could use as an office (getting the computer out of the living room), as well as giving me a room where I could do my crafting. Mr. Scribe has a bad habit of talking at me when I'm working and trying to concentrate, and there have been many times when I wished I could just go off and shut the door to listen to my music while I work.
And in the meantime I'm back to sorting through stuff. We've got a storage space where we're going to put a lot of the boxes I pack up, for sorting through over the next few months and determining whether things are to be tossed/recycled, donated/sold (we've got a couple of used bookstores that might be interested in some of the books) or kept. From here I can already see a lot of computer books that will go in the recycle category. I'll likely be working on boxes while watching the Super Bowl (mainly for the ads; I really have no dog in this year's hunt and if the ads get repetitive there's always the Puppy Bowl). Nothing like a pending deadline to lend some needed incentive to get shit done.
We're hoping to make the move early March (I'd really like to be in our new place in time for my birthday on March 4!), but we're also aiming for April if March is a no go for availability.
Next month will be my 56th birthday, and along with that I can detail what's been happening (or not) in the moving department.
So, how's life by you?
