WHAT??!!!! I know I'm not overdrawn! I'm a freaking accountant, damnit! I always know when I'm going to cut it close. And it definitely wasn't today! So, I pull up the online account. What in the hell is DSW in Columbus, OH? I don't live in Ohio! Online purchase? Nope, although, coincidentally, I did just buy some shoes on Amazon yesterday-one of very few shoe purchases I make. And $150 even? I don't make even online purchases. That sales tax thing always screws that possibility up.
So, I contest the charge. I don't want to cancel my debit card AGAIN! (The last two times, it was cancelled without my knowledge or permission. The bank decided it needed to happen, apparently. How they decided without informing me of the problem, I'll never understand, but...whatever.) No, I'll call the company that created the charge, and see if they possibly just keyed it in wrong (yes, I know better. But my fantasy world is a safe place for me. I reside there as long as possible, until the real world intrudes and I have to deal with it, in all it's discomfiture.)
After another 20 minute phone call (while I'm still trying to continue some semblance of actual work while taking care of personal business...multi-tasking at it's not-so-finest,) I learn the company (DSW) had already flagged the purchase. They had an IP address and an email address of where the electronic gift card was to be sent. But they can only give it to the police or the bank. Oooookkkkkaaaaayyyyyyy.....I just wanted to send a note stating that the effort they put in to being a thief is probably about 20 times the effort I put in being honest and I don't have to look over my shoulder all the damn time! But, no.
So, I go back to my bank account. And the credit is there! Yay! Problem solved. But wait. I'm still over-drafted! WTF! And there is another charge. For $150. Well, what they lack in creativity, they make up for in....absolutely NOTHING!
Now I am going to have to cancel the damn card. I call the bank. Card is cancelled. The bank is not out any money, so they will not pursue the fraud. The company that initiated the charges isn't going to do anything because they aren't out any money. So, for all the talk about cracking down on identity theft, it sure seems like nobody is doing a damn thing! Grrrrr.....
