My husband is not political at all. He rarely pays any attention to issues- gets all his information on what’s happening through my rants. Once in awhile, he’ll respond to something he’s heard about, like gun control. “Nobody needs those automatic weapons”, he’d say. “Why isn’t anyone doing something about it?” Or the rich not paying their fair share of taxes. That gets his gander up.
But today, when I came home from work, he told me he’s getting scared. And the look on his face told me he was serious. You see, here on Long Island, New York, we’ve been not only experiencing unseasonable warm weather- we’ve been breaking records. And on Christmas Eve, the temperature should rise near 70 degrees!
I would say our chances of a white Christmas are pretty null.
“It’s scary” he told me. “What’s happening? This weather is not right. And it’s more than just enjoying a nice day here and there. What about the rules of nature that all plants and animals follow? Are they as confused as I am?”
“It’s called climate change” I told him. “Caused by global warming. And for decades, the scientists and environmentalists have been warning us that this was going to happen. But nobody in power to do anything about it did anything about it. And now, many feel it’s too late.”
“Well. that just about sucks” he replied. “Who do I call to complain about this?”
I almost laughed at his innocence. But if he is waking up to the reality- I wonder, how many more are? Are republican voters, who listen to the word of FOX and consider it the divine truth finally saying, “Wait a minute- what do you mean climate change is a hoax. It’s 60 degrees in December in New York? That’s a ‘change’, right?”
Naw, I don’t think we could be that lucky. But like I said. My husband rarely cares about this stuff, and now he wants to become active.
Because he’s scared. Of what could happen next.
