In a recent diary, I noted that I was willing to give Thomas Jefferson a pass in naming our party's most important fundraising functions. Whereas I wasn't willing to do so for Andrew Jackson. On a recent trip to Washington, DC I found something that makes my commitment to maintaining Jefferson in the Democratic pantheon even stronger. Follow me below the fold for my reasoning.
With time to kill and a limited budget, I decided to see the monuments which I haven't yet seen on prior trips. For me, this meant starting with the Jefferson Memorial and proceeding around the Tidal Basin to FDR and MLK memorials.
In the Jefferson Memorial I found this inscribed on the wall:
To paraphrase as we grow wiser, we must change our laws and institutions to match our knowledge.
This is pretty much what I believe and I think many Kossacs will feel the same way.
Afterwards I went here:
"... that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
Words to remember in these days as we struggle against a relentlessly advancing plutocracy!
