Children of Men is one of my favorites. It's an unusual Science Fiction movie which has few special effects and focuses on human relationships. It's not exactly a popcorn movie, but its very worthwhile to watch when you have the time.
In Chidren of Men, every baby has been born stillborn for unknown reasons for more than two decades. It might be ecological, it might be something else. But whatever caused it, it appears that the human race is dying out and everyone knows it.
The protagonist Theo Faron is played by Clive Owen. He is a rather bleak man who states that he doesn't believe in politics, though he was once very political. All around him society is shutting down and he stays to himself, trying to avoid the chaos. His apathetic view changes completely when he comes across a woman who is successfully carrying a child to term.
She is an immigrant in a country in Britain in a time when immigrants are being persecuted and locked up in cages. She fears that if she goes to the government, they will take her baby and lock her away.
Theo Faron then drops everything he is doing, effectively abandoning his safe life, and he escorts her to the Human League, a group of scientists studying why women can't have children. He hopes that if they can see her, they can find a cure and keep her safe at the same time.
These dystopian thrillers are frequently very depressing, and the early part of the movie has some dark moments. Despite that, I didn't feel bad at the end. We learn that the protagonist lost his child and the light seemed to go out in his life. When he saw that he could finally do something to help, he realized he was willing to give up everything he had to prevent darkness from falling.
I don't find that depressing at all.
Children of Men has some of the best scenes I've ever seen, an incredible car chase. I thought about clipping part of it to show you, but it would constitute a spoiler and might damage your enjoyment of the movie.
One of the most striking scenes occurs when Faron finds himself in the middle of a battle between two large armies. They see the pregnant woman holding his hand, and suddenly all the shooting just stops. Most of the soldiers are in their twenties, and this would be the first pregnant woman they've ever seen. They just watch as he takes advantage of the cease fire to escort her across the battlefield.
As soon as they are out of sight of the soldiers, you could hear the shooting begin again.
Everyone have a good morning. Another record has fallen. Class four hurricanes are hurricanes with a wind velocity tracked at greater than 130 miles per hour.
And a final note...
At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, Huricane Kilo (135 mph) was located well southwest of the Hawaiian Islands followed by Hurricane Ignacio (140 mph) to the east of Hawaii and Hurricane Jimena (140 mph) in the eastern Pacific. Kilo was the last of the trio to reach Category 4 status, doing so on Saturday evening.
This is the first recorded occurrence of three Category 4 hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific basins at the same time. In addition, it's also the first time with three major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger) in those basins simultaneously, according to hurricane specialist Eric Blake of the National Hurricane Center.
Everyone have a good morning, I will talk to you soon.
