I arrived 9 AM and a line already formed. It would build for more than two hours and delay the festivities a bit.
This was an all-time record turnout. Not sure of the exact number, but there was a crowd in there!
Streaming in the main entrance and first check-in.
There was a program in the school auditorium that was extended to give time for all the crowd to enter the building. Filled to capacity and people standing in the aisles. The Fire Marshall came in and the hall was cleared in orderly fashion. Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz and other prominent Alaska Democrats gave short statements.
I made my way to the classroom that contained the other Sanders supporters of Anchorage District 19.
After some further talk about process, delegates, the state convention and other business a vote count was taken, in our room and of the Clinton supporters in the next Classroom. The District 19 total in the first vote was 127 for Sanders and 54 for Clinton. So, not as much of a wipeout as when Obama creamed Clinton eight years prior, but still decisive. Worth noting that District 19 is the most demographically diverse in Anchorage, and that Sanders likely did a lot better city-wide. Indeed, as I write this DKos announced that with 38% reporting, Sanders has won AK at large with 78%.
It’s a great day for democracy in action.
