Tony Spence was the editor of Catholic News Service, an “arm” of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference.
He has had a long distinguished career as a journalist.
On March 24th he tweeted: "LGBT protections get flushed as NC governor signs bill over #bathroomwars."
In an interview, Mr. Spence stated: "The far right blogsphere and their troops started coming after me again and it was too much for the USCCB (the Bishop’s Conference)" .
Spence attended a regularly scheduled staff story meeting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Sometime later, after meeting with Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield, the general secretary of the bishops' conference, Spence was escorted from the conference office building without being allowed to speak to his newsroom staff.
It appears that the fight against any form of bigotry will be a long battle. But in this instance, just a hint of pro-LGBT rights can get you fired.
