Greetings!
… and welcome to another Baja Arizona Kos Open Thread. I am your host today, providing a bit of Baja news and of course pictures from my backyard.
OUr dumB state legislature
I'm sure we're all relieved knowing that our legislators have all gone back to their real jobs, and have discontinued their general looting and pillaging of our rights and commons (and handing our tax dollars over to their corporate cronies) for the time being and sine die. That sine die is just to lull us into complacency, since there's almost no chance that they won't start up again.
Of special note (and already reported elsewhere on this site), the legislature was brow-beaten into re-authorizing the S-CHIP program that provides health insurance for children in low-income Arizona families. This was included in SB1457, which deals mostly with eligibility for educational scholarships in Arizona.
By the way, there are already seats opening up for the next legislative session, and it would be great to stuff some Better DemocratsTM into those seats. The AZ Secretary of State has a handbook (PDF) for people running for office in 2014. That is the date on the publication; one hopes that the rules haven't changed much in the last two years. Anyway, if you are a Better DemocratTM and you plan to run, get your application/fees/petitions/etc. submitted by 2 June 2016.
And in Pima County...
Alternatively, you may be interested in becoming a Pima County Supervisor! Current Supervisor Ray Carroll of district 4 has announced his retirement. So if you live in district 4 and want to take part in making exciting plans for our county (cough*SpaceBalloons*cough), this could be an opportunity for you.
News from elsewhere: Math on a plane
Don’t do it. Just don't.
A flight was delayed two hours and a prize-winning Italian economist (you know, the kind with a funny accent, and not one of those blond, northern Italians, either) was questioned by the TSA recently for deliberately executing mathematics in his seat, possibly with the help of certain portions of the Greek alphabet, obviously Arabic ciphers, and various other squiggly lines.
I know: differential equations are tough, but they are not necessarily terrorism.
And here's a picture from my backyard:
Wonder if I will be bojo'd for referring to Better DemocratsTM?
So that's it. Add your news, say hello, chat amongst yourselves, or at least let us know you stopped in by taking advantage of the handy tip-n-rec buttons.
