Wee Mama told me that the beginning stage of the Community Transcripts Project involved planting seeds. We are transitioning to the next phase. I believe I see little cracks in the earth, and sprouts are beginning to emerge. Will you please help our nascent project by gently watering our seeds?
Many people have supported this project with wonderful remarks, which I have been publishing one at a time. Here are three of my favorites:
“This is a terrific project. Kudos.” ~Meteor Blades.
“Long away and far ago, Kossack vgranucci wrote ‘Daily Kos - came for the politics, stayed for the community.’ That has certainly been the case for many of us. Transcripts, as 2thanks describes, are essential to many people, for a wide range of reasons. The Community Transcripts Project is being established to spread information in yet more ways. To make it more accessible, more searchable, more flexible. Please be part of this massive effort to make more available the very information for which this site is so highly regarded." ~Yasuragi
"When I learned recently that 2thanks worked as a transcriptionist, things suddenly clicked in place for me. 'Ah,' I thought, 'makes perfect sense.' One member of our group (Support the Dream Defenders) described 2thanks as a 'polymath,' and that he is. But he is no absent-minded professor. He is methodical, meticulous, proactive, and indefatigable. He gets things done. And on time. To have our own transcription group? Led by 2thanks? That sounds pretty exciting to me. I’m in!" ~JoanMar
Nominated Speeches
People have started nominating videos for transcription. DocDawg suggested a speech by the Rev. Dr. William Barber, II. We transcribed it. 2thanks suggested a candidate interview by Charles Gaba (Brainwrap). We transcribed it. TrueBlueMajority suggested and transcribed three speeches in all; we placed one of them on our transcripts page.
Others have recommended speeches for transcription. libera nos must have a transcript of Senator Elizabeth Warren’s recent speech before the ACS. Pakalolo submitted 10 ecological videos. Tortmaster suggested transcription of all of Dr. William Barber’s speeches. A non-Kossack suggested a video by the environmental activist Lois Gibbs and survivor of Love Canal on how we break through power. That’s a total of about 15 needed transcripts.
Fundraising Goal
Our fundraising goal is $3000. We estimated in our group’s introduction that we would be able to transcribe a 1-hour speech or interview for $300, including administrative costs, such as translation, research, publication, and mentoring. As we wrote in our introduction, our plan is to pay our transcriptionists more than a living wage. We have no desire to fundraise in little dribbles, so we thought we would begin with 10 1-hour recordings and ask for $3000. “Many a mickle make a muckle.”
Building Community, Building a Community
In this story, we are building a community. Please do what you can do to build community here. I invite you to do whatever you feel comfortable with and have time for. Some will donate, some can only recommend the story. Some will comment, some will reply to others. Some will recommend every comment, some will broadcast to their social media. Some will announce their donations, some will remain silent about donations. This is an open thread, and we invite you to create content for others to respond to. All community-building comments are welcome.
We welcome your donations, we welcome your community building. We accept that we cannot tell anyone what to do, and if you want to give, you will, but please let us say — We know there are generous activists and Democrats who would give their last $5 and starve themselves until the first of the month in order to make a donation. Please do not donate if donating will hurt you. Give yourself the joy of not giving away your power. You do not have to give today, others will. Take your turn at donating tomorrow, next week, or next year.

Brief Summary of the Community Transcripts Project
We create transcripts of important progressive speeches and interviews which would otherwise not be transcribed. We support many individuals and groups. We crowd-source funds to pay our skilled Kossack transcriptionists more than a living wage. For more details, please see our Introduction.
Who Will Benefit from Our Transcripts?
Transcripts support and empower many individuals and groups. For some, transcripts are a convenience. For others, transcripts are required. Some people need transcripts for more than one reason — One beloved Kossack wrote that she needs transcripts for eight reasons. Many people will benefit from transcripts, including the following:
- Down-ballot candidates and those who support them.
- Progressive activists and those who support them.
- People with many types of temporary or permanent disabilities and impairments (hearing, vision, cognitive).
- Creators, bloggers, reporters, editors, producers, students, and scholars who will be able to easily incorporate quotes in their writings.
- People who access web content via limited cellular data plans or dial-up connections.
- People who cannot listen to recordings due to time constraints and pressing priorities.
- People with visual memories who learn better by reading than by watching or listening.
- People who cannot participate at all without transcripts.
- People whose livelihood depends on transcripts.
- People whose acoustic environment prohibits the playing of videos due to employment, a sleeping or sound-sensitive family member or roommate, and/or sound pollution.
- Information seekers. Transcripts make video content accessible to search engines and automated web-archiving tools.
- People who do not speak or understand spoken English well and who depend on web translation to access information.
- People who crave the content of a video but do not want to inconvenience or provoke arguments with those around them.
- Members of Daily Kos who are paid to create transcripts.
