"Democrats believe it would be a grave mistake for the United States to wait for another nation to lead the world in combating the global climate emergency. In fact, we must move first in launching a green industrial revolution, because that is the key to getting others to follow; and because it is in our own national interest to do so. Just as America’s greatest generation led the effort to defeat the Axis Powers during World War II, so must our generation now lead a World War II-type national mobilization to save civilization from catastrophic consequences. We must think beyond Paris. In the first 100 days of the next administration, the President will convene a summit of the world’s best engineers, climate scientists, climate experts, policy experts, activists and indigenous communities to chart a course toward the healthy future we all want for our families and communities." Russell Greene and David Braun: Unfortunately, on first posting this story, I am not sure which one is which. One spoke from the podium. Transcript
[0:00] Chair: Are there seconds? There are seconds, so the clock begins to run for five minutes.
[0:08] Chair: Esteemed chairs and committee members, global warming threatens to destabilize the climate for tens of thousands of years, sending the earth into a hot state, inhospitable to humanity. If business as usual continues for much longer, ________ proliferating droughts, ________ subsequent states that it will cause the unraveling ________ ________ community. Furthermore, the global economy’s overshoot of the planet’s limits have ________ ________ extinction, which threatens to wipe out much of life on earth ________ century. If allowed to unfold, it would take some 10 million years for life to fully recover ________ ________. It is not enough that this is the most progressive platform in Democratic history. What matters is that it matches the moment. What we will be remembered for from our work here this weekend is not only what we included, but what we left out. The prioritizing of climate mobilization provides the most immediate action to social, economic, and environmental justice, and with a World War II home-front mobilization, the climate mobilization will create full employment and drastically reduce inequality with the principle of fair and shared sacrifices ________ ________.
[1:31] Member: I’d like to just observe that when this amendment came up, it was the first time we heard the sound of thunder. The thunder gods are talking, people. Sea-level rise is real. Climate science is real. We are here to take action, and to me, to do that ________ ________ be leaders of the future, to look out for the children of the future. We are in the great state of Florida, which will be under water unless we take dramatic action soon, now. Now is our moment, and we have a responsibility. How will you look your grandchildren in the eye when people are having to migrate, or we are running out of food, when famine is claiming the earth, when wars are going on everywhere? This is our opportunity to act. I ask you. I know people have been voting in blocs all day, but I ask you to reach in and look into your heart, and think about the eyes of your children, the eyes of children who will be suffering in Third world nations. We are leaders. This is the Democratic Party. We are the party of FDR. We are the party of the New Deal. In 1940, we had no army, no navy to speak of, but by 1945, by golly, we had the biggest army and the biggest navy in the world. We can do this, if we put our heads to it. But the fossil-fuel naysayers are going to tell us we can’t do it. Don’t believe the hype. ________ now! ________ ________
[3:34] Chair: ________ ________ There being no one wishing to be heard in opposition, I am going to call the question. All those in favor, raise your white card … Everyone … This is everyone in favor, please raise your hands. Everyone in opposition, please raise your …
[3:59] Audience: Climate deniers! Boo!
[4:06] Chair: I would say, the amendment passes.
[4:10] Audience: [Cheers.]
