Maybe because I’m a sports fan (and not just a political junkie) I’m one of the people not shocked that politicians are getting booed in Philly. I mean every, EVERYONE, get’s booed in Philadelphia.
Maybe a Philly native can add some more or better examples to this (or provide some context) but Philly has the most “boo prone” fans in America. Yes, it’s not what I would want to see at the DNC convention, so rather than get outraged about let’s defuse the situation with humor. Booing is what the “city of brotherly love does”. Rather than get angry by it, or try and cover it up, why not roll with the punches? If I was speaking in Philly that’s what I would do, work the history of being booed in Philadelphia into my speech.
Just to prove my point, here are some of the more note worthy ones I can think of.
One of the guys booing Santa, Ed Rendell, later became Governor of Pennsylvania (I think he even later admitted to throwing a snow ball)
Madonna getting booed in Philly
Destiny's Child (Beyonce’s old group) was at the height of their popularity at Game 4 of the 2001 NBA Finals (Sixers vs Lakers) in Philly and got booed at the end of their performance because the first member to be shown on the cameras had a Lakers’ jersey (they each wore either a Lakers or a Sixers jersey)
Gary Bettman is the commissioner of the National Hockey League, so yeah booooo….
Politicians who are hockey fans get booed in Philly (OK it was Sarah Palin)
There may be no crying in baseball, but there is booing!!!!
Many Philadelphia fans appeared not to favor Philly native Kobe Bryant's 2002 All-Star Game performance, even after he dedicated it to his home town.
Wrestling star? Boooooo….
So lighten up. I know politics and the issues we are fighting for are more important than sporting events, but humor goes a long way in both life and politics.
