I’ve been waiting to see a Texas poll forever, and we finally have one. Considering we’re talking about Texas, it is great.
Now, I don’t think anyone expected to get a poll out of the Lone Star state that said Hillary was leading by 15 points. However, that she is only behind by six with 80+ days to go makes it a bit of a race down there. Sure, Trump probably will still eek out a victory, but the GOP might have spent money down there to protect down ticket races. Also note, Mitt Romney won Texas four years ago by 16 points.
The really big news though is the generational gap. The only age groups that Trump is winning are people are 46 to 65 and over 65 years old. Here is the age breakdown:
This bodes incredibly well for the future. With ever changing demographics, Texas could very well turn blue in 2020. Also, with a truly statewide campaign, Democrats could make some pick ups in 2018.
Finally, I wonder what effect sending Tim Kaine down there will have. While Hillary has a huge lead with the Latino population already, 27% choose Trump in the poll. There has to be a way of peeling some of them away, and getting more first time Latinos registered and to the polls. Also, changing the mind of a percent or two of the senior citizens would be nice...but I don’t know if that is possible.
Just maybe, we could take Texas. In this crazy election, who knows.
