Good morning, gardeners, and welcome to the Saturday Morning Garden Blog!
We're finally entering our "summer drought" phase here in the Pacific Northwest, and the garden is pretty much on auto-pilot. Once the summer solstice is in the rear view mirror and the soil turns to concrete, i tend to focus my energies on little more than basic garden maintenance. Oh sure, i could work myself to the bone out there. Goodness knows, there's no shortage of things that need doing. But there's something to be said for kicking back with a glass of chilled tea on a gorgeous summer day; breezes dancing and a little music playing in the distance. Speaking of music, shall we refill our beverages of choice and simply enjoy eine kleine Gartenmusik? Who doesn't love a little garden music on a lazy Saturday morning ...
Not surprisingly, Youtube has quite a selection of videos that beautifully mingle the loveliness of gardens and music. This one is actually called "eine kleine Gartenmusik" …
And this one features some magnificent time lapse photographs of flowers …
Although i came to gardening rather late in life, music has always been important to me. In my younger years, i could listen to the same songs over and over again, wearing out the vinyl until the arm of the turntable had to be weighed down with nickels so the needle wouldn't skip. Thinking back, quite a few of my favorite songs in some way referenced gardening in the lyrics:
"... it was just the arbutus rustling ..." ~ Joni Mitchell, For the Roses
" ... in the garden wet with rain ..." ~ Van Morrison, No Guru, No Method, No Teacher
"I want to plant a little garden with you now
Take care of a piece of the earth somehow
And tend it when we're old and gray and
Try to straighten up and say, well,
I'm so glad to see you today
Hey baby hey baby hey baby hey ..." ~ Greg Brown, Further In
"Hello lamppost, what'cha knowing
I've come to watch your flowers growin' ..." ~ Simon & Garfunkel, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme
"Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming
heads all empty and I don't care ..." ~ Grateful Dead, American Beauty
And who doesn't love a garden party?
Or Dolly Parton?
Or roses (or looking at life through rose colored glasses, as the case may be)?
Do you listen to music while you're out in the garden? What are some of your favorite tunes?
PS: The upcoming Saturday Morning Garden Blog hosting schedule is pretty thin. Let's fill er up, shall we?
