... the White House has given the FBI permission to interview anyone relevant to its investigation of sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Does a “sexual assault allegation” scope allow for investigations of lying about the yearbook, perjury about receiving the Democratic emails, the $250,000 dissapearing debt, issues of judicial temperament, or illegal drug or alcohol use, or lying about alcohol or drug use? Depending on interpretation these later questions could still be “out of scope” under the narrower definition.
If McGahn knowingly pulled the trick of changing Senators Jeff Flake’s and Chris Coons’ “all allegations” scope to an “any credible sexual assault violations” scope, possibly even without Trump’s knowledge, we could still be getting a tricky limitation change in the original intent of the Flake-Coons agreement.
Under the all allegations scope Kavanaugh could be asked to take a lie detector test this afternoon, with a notation if he refused. Under the second scope maybe not, or if so, could the latter questions be excluded without mention?
I don’t trust these ba… bad people for a minute.
We have to assume they will use any and every trick they can think of to subvert or limit this investigation. If this nomination goes down it will be McGahn’s biggest career failure of a lifetime.
Senator Feinstein and others must demand to see the written orders McGahn has given the FBI, and FBI Director Wray needs to announce that the scope is “any allegation a Senator, any Senator, might consider relevant to their determination if Kavanaugh is fit for a lifetime appointment to the SCOTUS,” that they can get by Friday.
Under the broadest scope definition all the questions submitted to the FBI in writing by Senator Bernie Sanders should be investigated.
Or maybe the clock should be reset to start a week from when the President publishes a signed order to this effect, and Wray confirms it hasn’t been secretly overruled somewhere else down the line.
Otherwise, we will be justified in suspecting these deceptions are just more tricks to run out the clock so as little as possible will be discovered by Friday.
And Kavanaugh, SCOTUS, the Senate, the White House, and the United States’ system of Justice will forever be tainted with doubt which will be a terrible tradegy for all us.
