Episode One - The Woman Who Fell To Earth
.
*[ SOME SPOILERS ]*
JODIE WHITTAKER
begins as the new Doctor, in expected form-
both knowledgeable and eccentric, both harebrained and heroic-exactly like each Doctor who has come before-and she fits in just fine. Slightly over the top as all Who’s are, and slightly camp[as all Who’s are] the ep is fast paced and family fare, as per usual.... Who as Who is supposed to be.
The first thing l notice about it is it that it looks like a SciFi movie-
good actors, expensive sets and scenery, intricate plot and generally glossy and well filmed, with good special effects.
[The aliens are super cool]
lt’s also great to see a cast made up mostly of POC, with only few White actors,
and one of the characters has a disability. The "Un-PC" crowd will undoubtedly whinge. But it's modern and accurate to English society, and decidedly Un-Brexit.
Set in Sheffield, it begins with a Youtuber talking to his camera, then shifts to him in the beautifully lush Northern English countryside. Great green scenery abounds. Later the nighttime city of Sheffield looks moody, noir, foggy and beautiful, and the jokes are funny. The all working class cast is very good. It sets up the new Who season in fine form.
So, we basically begin, then, on a train with an older couple, and watch as all hell breaks loose and weird creatures drive everyone off, leaving only three people to cope. What will they do?
(Watch, and you'll find out...)
The aliens are [without giving too much away] like Alien or Predator [as has been mentioned online. ] lt’s not the strongest Who l have ever seen , but it's fun and exciting and makes a great starter episode for series 11 and for Jodie Whittaker’s new Doctor. She does a fine job, thus proving the Doctor needn't be played by anyone except a talented actor, of whatever type, and gender is never really even noticeable in this new series. The glass ceiling isn't so much broken, as just simply not even there, it's been relegated to a timey-wimey lack of existence.....
Highly recommended-
4 out of 5 stars to the new Dr Who.
