Once again, an article has been written that seems damning to Trump, but which really changes nothing.
However, it quite possibly is an encouraging statement to rank and file GOP who don’t spend their time paying attention to Trump on Twitter or wherever else it is he pushes his gibberish.
If you are a GOP voter, and you believe that Trump is reckless, and that he does things without regards to tradition, then this OpEd confirms for you that Trump is reckless. It also confirms for you that the GOP platform is still being implemented without much stopping it.
The NYT has successfully been harnessed to send out GOP talking points disguised as a negative editorial against the GOP president.
“It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room. We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Donald Trump won’t.”
These are people who think that the GOP agenda is right, and that if they just have a little more time, then they’ll keep the MAGA rolling by doing other great things, such as cutting more taxes, cutting more regulations, cutting more funding for necessary services, and ramping up debt so we can coddle billionaires and feed the military more money.
To be clear, ours is not the popular “resistance” of the left. We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous.
At the end of the day, after reading this opinion piece, the mainstream GOP will feel relieved that someone is helping make Republican policies happen. After reading this piece, those Trump supporters who do not happen to be regular GOP voters will say, “meh, some unhinged person thinks Trump is crazy. Fake news.” And when a liberal/left/progressive/dem reads this piece, they’ll say, “Look, other people think Trump is crazy, too!”
IMO, this has the appearance of an intentional ruse to calm the nerves of “moderate” GOP who don’t like how Trump talks and acts, but who still like terrible GOP policies that hurt the country.
