Houston avoided catastrophe as Mayor Sylvester Turner won a second four year term yesterday. He defeated a Trump type acolyte in the self funded millionaire lawyer Tony Buzbee spending almost $13 million of his own money in the election.
The fourth largest city in the nation, and largest in Texas, remained in Democratic hands (municipal elections are technically nonpartisan) and City Council added a number of new women: Tiffany Thomas, Abbie Kamin, Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Dr. Letitia Plummer, and Sallie Alcorn.
Mayor Turner’s reelection solidifies the gains in Harris County (Houston is the County seat) last year when Lina Hidalgo won the County Judge position and gained a Democratic majority on County Commissioners Court.
Overall it was a good night for Democrats in Houston.
