Today, March 22, 2019, Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter became the longest-lived American president, surpassing George H. W. Bush's 94 year, 171 day lifespan. Congratulations Jimmy!
Former Georgia governor James Earl Carter was elected as an outsider in the post-Watergate years, ousting sitting U.S. President Gerald Ford in 1976. Although he had a rocky presidency and lost his re-election bid in 1980 (not aided by the fact that Reagan and the GOP were trying sabotage Carter and were through backchannels negotiating with the Iranians themselves), Carter made the most of his post-presidency.
In those post-presidential years Carter — one of the most decent and honorable men to be President - created the Carter Center, which is a non-governmental and non-profit organization with the purpose of advancing human rights and alleviating human suffering, including helping improve the quality of life for people in more than 80 countries. He has also contributed to the expansion of Habitat for Humanity, to build affordable housing. He became a well-respected elder statesman, who was employed in various diplomatic endeavors. He received the Nobel Peace Prize (2002) for his work "to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development".
Even after surviving cancer in 2015, Carter seems to remain in good health.
Congratulations to President Carter in passing this milestone and cheers to many many more years!
