I know that most of us would prefer that Trump were gone from office tomorrow, but it is worthwhile to remember how long the process took during the investigations of Richard Nixon:
October 30, 1973 — Impeachment inquiry begins, conducted by House Judiciary Committee staff.
February 6, 1974 — Official resolution passes House “providing appropriate power to the Committee on the Judiciary to conduct an investigation of whether sufficient grounds exist to impeach Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States.”
July 27-30, 1974 — House Judiciary Committee votes to impeach Nixon on three counts.
August 9, 1974 — Nixon resigns.
Note that we already at the end of September. It will likely take months to fight the stonewalling and bogus executive privilege claims and it might be January before an official authorization is given. Then months of hearings will follow and if things take as long as they did in 1974 the actual impeachment will occur in June 2020. The Democratic National Convention is July 13-16 and the Republican National Coronation is August 24-27. The actual impeachment trial may well be between the two Conventions!
We may be living in Interesting Times.
