Tonight, on the way to work at one of my side jobs, I passed a horrible car accident on i-75, just south of the Clay’s Ferry Bridge near Lexington, KY. The weather here has been rainy, and the road is almost always slippery in that particular spot every time there is so much as a sprinkle.
I had to sit in standstill traffic for about 30 minutes before the police started allowing cars to pass by. Once the traffic got going, it was stop and go—we would move a few feet and then stop, then wait a few minutes, and move some more. When I got to the point where the accident was, I unfortunately had to stop, in a spot that granted a very clear view of the vehicles involved.
There were about 5 cars involved in the accident. At least three of them appeared to be completely totaled. Worse, yet, I could see that the severely crumpled passenger side doors on one car had been forced open by the first responders, and it looked as if they had covered what was likely two people with sheets. One was in the front driver’s seat—somebody had pinned up the sheet to the ceiling of the car to block the view of the driver area. The other was draped over what appeared to be a young child in the back seat, judging from the silhouette and size.
I hope I am wrong, and we hear on the news tomorrow that nobody actually died.
The most horrifying thing, though, was the guy in the car just ahead of me. He was actually hanging his head and arms out of the window, filming the accident. Probably planning on posting it to social media somewhere. Could he have a little respect for the dead—and the families of the people who were injured and killed? And couldn’t the cops standing there tell him to stop?
I know this isn’t much of a diary, but something about this just really, really bothers me. I just needed a place to vent.
Anyway, there is going to be a lot of bad weather over the next few days. Be careful out there if you have to drive.
