Yesterday was the annual presidential turkey pardon. This event is not something I ever pay attention to but one of my friends from overseas mentioned it on the game we play. He’s tends to act somewhat childish about things in the way he talks about things he doesn’t understand especially regarding weird American customs. After finding out about the turkeys being pardon by Biden yesterday, he posted the comment, “Why are turkeys being pardoned? What did they do wrong?” Someone had the foresight to respond, “Because they are delicious.”
I usually do not respond to these somewhat asinine comments/questions of his because I know he actually doesn’t care. Typically, he will keep responding why whenever I answer him with short statements about whatever he gets his focus at any particular moment much like a puppy. This time I decided to text him a term paper length history of presidents and Thanksgiving turkeys dating back to when Wilson received the first presidential turkey and sort of pardoned it before the First Family ate it for Thanksgiving.
For anyone who is interested, this year’s turkeys are named Liberty and Bell which is different from thier typical food names. He asked who names them. I guess probably the company that donates them but their names are always related in some way whether it is Tater & Tots, Peas & Carrots or, as said above, Liberty and Bell (Liberty Bell). While researching, I came across one year’s pair being names Marshmallow & Yam. That one I liked.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
