It’s been another week and here we are. More candidates in the republican race and lots of rampant stupidity from them, but I guess that is just par for the course these days. It’s also Pride month, and that seems to be going well in some places and not in others. I haven’t been to a pride event in well over a decade, maybe two. But I appreciate the people who go out and have a good time.
So as the political scene warms up, I’ve been working on Mum. She doesn’t stay informed in purpose, and votes for whatever republican is at the top of the list in each category. She doesn’t like trump, but for some reason she *hates* Biden and will not give a reason why. So as far as she is concerned she “doesn’t have a choice” but to vote for trump if he’s the nominee, because voting dem is out of bounds, and other parties “don’t count”.
The thing is, we live in a southern red state and while we have a dem governor now, he’s termed out at the end of this term and we will have another republican idiot in charge. And I’m gay and trans and Jewish, so that can be challenging enough in and of itself — but to have her actively vote for people who can directly affect my rights is not ok.
And the thing is in a lot of ways she holds very liberal positions for an military wife boomer who grew up with segregation. Partly because both my brother and I are disabled — and he’s in prison — and she wants a safety net, but not to tax the rich. She wants prison reforms, but not if it helps “bad” prisoners. (my brother is the golden child, even though he’s in prison he was “railroaded”)
She worries I don’t get enough food, but doesn’t want SNAP to benefit “those people” when I’m on SNAP. It’s ok I need it, but “they” are taking advantage. She wants education to cost less, but she doesn’t understand that a college degree is now the new high school diploma, and you can’t just go get a job on a walk in 5 minute conversation and a handshake anymore. And she definitely doesn’t understand the need for grad school to have a high paying job. She thinks I should work at a bank or something, but I am disabled for a reason.
I’m not sure how to reach her — I pitch more centrist republicans for her to think about that aren’t trump or DeSatan, (right now I’m try Chris Christy) and how republicans are basically trying to outlaw my existence — but even with links and evidence, she thinks all politicians are crooks and the same, and the republicans “help the military” when they don’t at all. I keep talking to her in small doses, pointing out a stupid law here, a dumb statement there, a couple of inditements, hoping to show her that the party she remembers from Reagan doesn’t exist any more.
So what’s your fucking problem?
