This came up out of the blue…
Ben Carson’s former campaign chair on his 2016 Presidential campaign and his top deputy were just charged with violating the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) for work relating to the country of Yemen starting in 2017…..
Both were charged by information.
FARA is almost never charged on its own, as it can usually be avoided by filing amended (and late) filings with the government. However, it is the charge that is levied when the defendant is cooperating on a bigger fish relating to the same actions.
HIs campaign chair's charging document is here
The other campaign staffer's charging document is here.
Here is a prior case that followed that pattern, relating to an associate of Paul Manafort.
UPDATE… The country they were doing work for was QATAR, as well as Yemen… The same country named in the superseding indictment of Senator Menendez unsealed today. (though there does not seem to be a link between them)
If there is, it will become public soon enough, but the fact that the same foreign government was involved in both cases may just be why they finished the case up today, to clean up any tangentially related cases to the Menendez prosecution.
