The votes in Michigan are still coming in as I write this diary. This year there has been a concerted effort to get people to vote uncommitted” in the Democratic primary to send a message to the Biden Administration to change course vis-a-vis Israel/Gaza. Currently, uncommitted is running about 16% which is about 6 points higher than in 2012 when Obama was running for re-election. This is not a significant increase statewide unless you look at a couple of counties: Wayne (Dearborn) and Washtenaw (Ann Arbor). While very little vote has been reported in Wayne County, the county is home to Dearborn, the most heavily concentrated Muslim population in the US. It should be expected to have a high uncommitted vote especially since the mayor of Dearborn is one of the leaders of the movement. Washtenaw, which is home to many of the state biggest colleges, uncommitted is currently running at 22% with about half the vote in. Both of these counties are going to be critical for Biden to win Michigan in November and his administration’s response to the Israel/Gaza conflict has been righteously condemned there.
As an atheistic Jew, I have been a big critic of Israel’s politics going on a couple of decades now. After Yithzak Rabin’s assassination, I felt there was little chance a two-state peace solution could be achieved as much as that pained me. The continued right-wing march of the Israeli government has only made me more sure peace is a long ways away. It hasn’t helped the US government, which has the ability to easily influence the Israeli government, has done little to do so when Dems have held the White House.
I don’t know how the results of the primary will shake out, but I hope it will send a message to President Biden that he needs to exert the influence he has to stop the slaughter or at the very least cut off funding the genocide being perpetrated on innocent civilians.
And happy half birthday to me. It was yesterday,
