Breaking News: Eric Cantor has said that he cannot support the bill because there are not enough spending cuts. The bill won't come up for a vote without amendments.
More info to come. This was per MSNBC. I am actually surprised. A bill that passed 89 to 8 in the Senate was not good enough for the Republican leadership to put up for a vote. They broke their promise that if a bill passed the Senate, then it would get a vote in the House. The President and the Senate called their bluff.
12:27 PM PT: Again Title on MSNBC now is Breaking News: House: Majority leader Cantor opposes fiscal cliff deal
12:30 PM PT: House says that they will amend the bill before it gets a vote. The Senate is in recess. If a compromise is not reached between the two houses by January 3, then the measure must wait until the new Congress is sworn in.
An amended bill will almost certainly not be accepted - the amendments that the House want will cause the bill to be rejected in the Senate.
12:33 PM PT: 37 of 40 members of House GOP reps who spoke, spoke against the bill.
A friend of Boehner who is a member said that the thought these people were living in an alternative universe (Russert - source , my paraphrase).
Russert also said that his sources indicate Reid will laugh at an amended bill. The friend also said that it would probably pass if Boehner put it to a vote.
12:35 PM PT: The leader and the Speaker said that the lack of spending cuts was a universal concern among their members.
12:36 PM PT: If it goes to the new Congress, they would have to start the legislative process all over again.
12:43 PM PT: the National GOP brand continues to circle the drain. However, all but 15 GOP House members are in districts President Obama lost. Their members are largely in safe very republican districts.
Boehner says that he would vote against the bill.
12:44 PM PT: La Tourette - it is heavy on tax increases and has no spending cuts.
However, that is simply false now. It is now purely a tax cut, primarily for the middle class.
12:45 PM PT: Russert: We are getting indications that the Senate will not even look at an amended bill.
12:45 PM PT: La Tourette, the bill passed 89 to 8.
12:46 PM PT: La Tourette - the majority of the majority would not support it, it would not even hit triple digits, probably 40 to 50.
12:47 PM PT: La Tourette- I am not worried if the House GOP gets the blame , I am in a safe district. (last part is a close paraphrase).
12:50 PM PT: Me - Bill passes 89 to 8 and it still won't be allowed a vote on the floor by Boehner. Wow !
12:56 PM PT: Dick Durbin said if the bill is amended, then the bill is killed.
Democratic Senate leaders: we are done.
1:00 PM PT: House GOP now owns the tax hikes on the middle class and the lack of extension of UI 100%. It is totally and completely theirs.
We are done now. Thank you House GOP, you may go now.
1:01 PM PT: Interesting watching mass public political suicide of national GOP.
Too bad there was collateral damage.
